Running out of time (again)

Day 42, May 13, 1997

San Francisco

160 km in three days

We all liked San Francisco, and we had only a half day left. We decided to split up and each go our own way. We also drove just a few miles to Caltrain and spent just 45 minutes commuting into the city rather than driving to BART.

Erica went off towards Powell street, and Ralph elected to accompany me to the "South of Market" area of the city, which was right beside the train station. I had a few more places I wanted to see that Tanya had recommended. We ate our lunch in Golden Gate Park and rode a bus to Castro. By that time, it was time to turn around and head back to Caltrain. There was still much of the city I wanted to see....

This day was gloriously sunny and warm. I had chosen to carry a pack with my Gortex jacket so I wouldn't freeze. Instead, I was hot and carrying a heavy pack. Despite this, I enjoyed myself. I like just wandering up and down streets, looking at buildings, jumping on buses to see where they take me.

We returned to Stanford in time to make one more meal: Ralph made Moussaka for the three of us, Bruce and Heidi, Jay and Amit. Bruce's other room-mate, who had been reclusive, turned out to have the 'flu. We went with Bruce and Heidi to a local watering hole, but returned home early because Bruce and Heidi were both beginning to feel sick.
