Caldicot Castle 1991

The cheerful crew of the CADW-funded excavation adjacent to Caldicot Castle in 1991. In this group photo we were showing off our pristine t-shirts (which we weren't allowed to wear in the trenches as they might get dirty). You'll notice that there is always someone who manages to get his on back-to-front. My shirt, though full of holes, is still wearable 12 years later!

Directed by Nigel Nayling (back row third from right), and published in 1998, the excavation was of waterlogged deposits of peat and silt threatened by changes in the water table. It revealed massses of preserved wood and other environmental material, lots of dog skulls and part of a boat.
