Born in Faversham, Kent, England.

Son of a schoolmaster, later headmaster, and artist mother. Two brothers and a sister.

Schools:

I attended about 12 schools. I started school in Aden, Republic of South Yemen. Primary schooling in Adelaide, South Australia. Secondary schooling at Borden Grammar School, Sittingbourne, Kent.

University:

Imperial College, University of London. BSc ARCS in zoology.

I was fortunate to be amongst the last students to study "old-fashioned" zoology and botany, the sort of stuff learned by Huxley and HG Wells; from amoeba to humans, from blue-green algae to redwoods.

Archaeology:
