Saskatchewan Lenore Lake(another), a place called Ralph, and the prairies July, 1997 ![]() Like many others, no doubt, we had assumed that we could hurry across the "boring" prairies. Instead we were captivated and slowed by the wealth of detail in the foreground, and the skies in the background. We found another Lenore Lake, and a tiny place called Ralph. We drove through clouds of dragonflies. Weather developed around us as if illustrating the pages of some meterological text book. Old buildings crumbled back into the earth. Birds swam in ponds and ditches, or perched on wires. Wild flowers grew everywhere. Fields of yellow canola (oilseed rape) and blue flax thickened the air with pollen. We
came to love the prairies, at least in the
